One of the best parts of staying at Deer Lake Farmstead is how much sits within a short drive. There are plenty of things to do near Mille Lacs Lake — from world-class walleye water less than a mile away to quiet trails, small-town cafes, and a lake right outside your door where the only engine noise is the one you brought.

Fishing Mille Lacs
Mille Lacs is one of Minnesota’s signature walleye lakes, and Malmo Bay is less than a mile up the road. Beyond walleye, the lake holds smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskie, and panfish. Regulations on Mille Lacs change from season to season, so check current DNR rules before you head out.
Back at the park, quiet Deer Lake is non-motorized — good for panfish off the T-dock and a calm place to end the day. Some guests fish the big lake in the morning and the small one at sunset.
Trails, Paddling, and State Parks
Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is a short drive and offers hiking, an observation tower, and interpretive history along the Rum River. The Mille Lacs and Aitkin County trail networks open up ATV riding in the warmer months and snowmobiling once the snow sets in.
Deer Lake itself is ideal for paddling. Because it is non-motorized, mornings are flat and quiet — kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards all work well straight off the dock.
Small Towns, Food, and Local Stops
Malmo, Isle, Wahkon, and Garrison are all close by for groceries, bait, supplies, and a meal out. You will find supper clubs, lakeside patios, Friday fish fries, meat raffles, and the kind of small-town stops that turn into personal traditions. Grand Casino Mille Lacs is nearby for dining and entertainment, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post is worth a visit for the history of the area.
Every Season Looks Different
Summer is fishing, paddling, and long evenings outside. Fall brings color along the roads around Malmo and through Kathio, plus hunting season across the region. Winter turns the area over to ice fishing and snowmobiling. Spring is quiet, green, and a good time to have the water mostly to yourself.

A Day, Two Ways
Guests tend to fall into one of two rhythms, and the location supports both.
The big-lake day. Out early to Malmo Bay while the water is still flat, a few hours chasing walleye, lunch in Isle or Wahkon, and back by mid-afternoon. Maybe a run to Grand Casino Mille Lacs in the evening, or a supper club dinner if the fishing was good enough to celebrate.
The slow day. Coffee on the deck while the farm fields wake up, a paddle around Deer Lake before the wind picks up, an afternoon on the dock, and a fire once the sun drops. Nobody goes anywhere. This is the one people underestimate before they get here.
The point of the location is that you do not have to choose in advance. Mille Lacs is close enough that a change of plans costs you fifteen minutes, not an hour.
Practical Notes on Things to Do Near Mille Lacs Lake
A few things worth knowing before you plan:
- Check regulations first. Mille Lacs fishing rules change season to season. Confirm current DNR regulations and season dates before you go.
- Watch the wind. Mille Lacs is shallow and wide, so it builds waves fast. Deer Lake stays calm when the big lake does not — a useful fallback.
- Trails shift with the calendar. The Mille Lacs and Aitkin County networks run ATVs in the warm months and snowmobiles once snow sets in.
- Small towns keep small hours. Confirm before you drive out for dinner, especially outside peak summer.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Deer Lake Farmstead sits in Malmo, on the southeast side of Mille Lacs. From the Twin Cities it is about 105 miles — under two hours in normal traffic — with the last stretch a short jog off the main road to the south shore of Deer Lake.
Once you are here, most of what people want is within a fifteen to thirty minute drive. Malmo Bay is under a mile. Isle and Wahkon are quick runs for dinner or supplies. Garrison sits up the west side of the lake. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum are both easy afternoon trips, and Grand Casino Mille Lacs is close enough for an evening out without committing your whole day.
